The New Rich Content Editor will be enabled in all courses on January 16, 2021.
The Rich Content Editor (RCE) is the tool in Canvas that allows you to format text, add images, attach files, link to websites, embed media, etc. when creating announcements, assignments, discussions, pages, quizzes and questions. The New Rich Content Editor is an update to the previous Canvas Rich Content Editor.
This update will include the following new features:
- The toolbar includes a condensed, more intuitive look
- Toolbar menus are grouped by common icons and interactions
- The content sidebar only displays when linking to other parts of Canvas, accessing Canvas files, or accessing uploaded media
- Image and media additions include drag and drop
- Images include an Unsplash search and content auto-scaling
- The Keyboard shortcut, Accessibility Checker, and HTML Editor icons have moved to the bottom of the editor next to the word count
- The New RCE has introduced auto-saving

What Canvas Features Use the New Rich Content Editor?
The following Canvas features use the New Rich Content Editor:
- Announcements
- Assignments
- Discussions

View New Rich Content Editor

The New Rich Content Editor includes the content area, the menubar, and the toolbar.
In the content area, you can add and preview the page content [1].
In the menubar, you can use the menu options to format the page content [2].
In the toolbar, you can format text [3]; insert links, images, media, and documents [4]; open external tools [5]; format paragraphs [6]; clear formatting [7]; add tables [8]; and insert an equation [9]. When content in a browser window is long enough to require a scroll bar, the toolbar is fixed at the top of the browser window.
New Icons and Features
New Menu Bar and Tool Bar will show up above the content editor field


These import icons allow you to quickly embed a link, an image, media, or a document into your announcement.

If the browser isn’t expanded to fit the full width of the toolbar, the toolbar displays an Options menu that includes the remaining toolbar items

The plug icon will allow you to link external applications and tools

The Keyboard Shortcuts, Accessibility Checker, Word Count, and HTML viewer buttons are now located under the content field.
