Acquiring MATLAB

The media required to install MATLAB can be found on Please download the required files to a local computer before starting installation.
  • Available for Mac and Windows computers. Linux users can use Matlab in Stevens AppSpace.
  • Folder: Matlab2020
NOTE: The website is accessible to all staff/faculty, undergraduates and graduates.

Installation Guide

  • Before installing, we recommend that a wired connection be used.
  • Please un-install any previous MATLAB versions.
  • Installation instructions are applicable to all versions of MATLAB 2013a up to the current latest release. 

1. Choose the MATLAB folder located on under Windows software, open the folder for your desired version and click Download.

2. A pop-up will appear. Click Save File to save the zipped file of the executable file. Once it is saved to your computer, extract the contents and click matlab_R2019b_win64.exe to begin the installation process.

3. Ensure that Log in with a MathWorks Account is selected and press Next.

4. Agree to the Terms of the License Agreement by selecting Yes and press Next.

5. If you have a MathWorks account, log in (your email should be your full address) and press Next and skip to Step 7.  If you do not have an account, select I need to create an Account and press Next.

6. If you need to create an account fill in the form on the next screen. You must use your full Stevens email address.

7. The activation key can be found in the root directory of the Matlab installation folder that you downloaded from 

There will be a .txt file called Activation

8. If creating a new Mathworks account you will receive a confirmation email to your Stevens address with a link to confirm your account.

9. The link will take you to the Mathworks website which will confirm your new account is activated.

10. Leave the installation location as the default unless you need to install to a specific folder. Press Next.

11. Leave the product selection as the default unless you need to install specific products. Press Next.

12. If you would like to have Matlab shortcut on your desktop, select Desktop. Press Next.

13. Press Install to confirm MATLAB installation.

14. Make sure Activate MATLAB is checked. Press Next.

15. Press Next.

16. Locate the activation key stated on step 7 and paste it.

17. Do not change the default user for the software unless you are logged on as a different user to install the software and you will be using it under another account. Press Next

18. Press Confirm. MATLAB should now be installed and activated.
