UDOIT - Canvas Course Accessibility Checker

What is UDOIT?

The Universal Design Online Content Inspection Tool (UDOIT) enables you to run a scan of your Canvas courses and identify common accessibility issues. A report is generated from the scan that indicates errors needing revision and includes suggestions for improvement. You can easily preview and make edits from within the dynamic report generated using the "UFIXIT" option, as well as create a PDF of the report. UDOIT was developed by the Center for Distributed Learning (CDL) at the University of Central Florida. Here is the video introduction and demonstration of UDOIT.

What Does UDOIT Do?

UDOIT will identify “errors” and provide “suggestions” in the following areas of your Canvas course. Please Note: Some items cannot be examined by UDOIT. These include external documents and some videos/audio files for captioning/transcripts.

  • Announcements
  • Assignments
  • Discussions
  • Files (i.e., .html files)
  • Pages
  • Syllabus
  • Module URLs

UDOIT Checks for the Appropriate Use of the Following:

How Do I Scan My Course?

Click UDOIT on you course navigation meanu. Note: Students cannot see the button or run the report. The link is visible only to instructors. Please Note: If this is the first time you have accessed UDOIT, click Authroize to grant UDOIT access to your courses.

Then, click Run Scanner. Please remain on the page as UDOIT scans your course for common accessbility issues. Tip: if you have a large content course, you may want to select content to scan, for example select "Module URLs".

How do I Fix Erros and Suggestions?

After you run a scan on your course, a report will appear on the screen. Select "View the source of this issue" to learn more about the error or suggestions and then click on the "U FIX IT" button. The "UFIXIT" component allows you to fix some of the problems right inside the app, which immediately sends the updated information back to Canvas.

Once you have corrected the error, click "Submit" to make the change. Please Note: UDOIT does not make changes to your course materials.

In order to make your course more universally designed and accessible, it is suggested you run UDOIT at least once before the semester begins.
