Respondus LockDown Browser and Respondus Monitor Student Guide

What is Respondus LockDown Browser?

LockDown Browser is a locked browser for taking quizzes in Canvas. It prevents you from printing, copying, going to another URL, or accessing other applications during an assessment. If a Canvas quiz requires that LockDown Browser be used, you will not be able to take the quiz with a standard web browser.

LockDown Browser works like a standard internet browser but some options have been removed or work differently. The following image highlights some of these differences:

  1. Modified Toolbar: the condensed toolbar includes only Forward, Back, Refresh, and Stop functions.

  2. Assessment Mode: assessments are shown full-screen and cannot be minimized, resized, or exited until submitted for grading.

  3. Disabled Controls: all printing, keystroke combinations, screen grab, function keys, and right-click menus have been disabled.

  4. Links: links to other web servers do not compromise the secure testing environment.

  5. Blocked Features and Applications: the Start button (for Windows systems), system tray, and menu bars have been removed. Hundreds of screen capture, messaging, screen-sharing, and network monitoring applications are blocked.

What is Respondus Monitor?

Respondus Monitor is a webcam feature for LockDown Browser that records students during online, non-proctored quizzes. When this feature is enabled for a Canvas quiz, students are required to use a webcam and microphone with LockDown Browser. After the quiz is complete, an instructor can review details of the assessment, even the recorded videos.

Your computer must have a functioning webcam and microphone. A stable, broadband connection is also required.

How to Get Started

Installing LockDown Browser

You will need to follow this procedure for each and every device (Windows or Mac) you plan to use to take quizzes with Respondus LockDown Browser and/or Respondus Monitor.

  1. Use the Stevens link to download and install LockDown Browser.

  2. Repeat for every device that will be used to take assessments.

Running a Systems Check

It is a good idea to run a systems check prior to taking a quiz (well beforehand if possible).

  1. Close all programs, unless one is to be used to connect you to the internet.

  2. Locate the “LockDown Browser” shortcut on the desktop and double-click it. (For Mac users, launch “LockDown Browser” from the Applications folder)

  3. If prompted to close a blocked program (e.g. screen capture, instant messaging, etc.) choose Kill Applications when prompted.

  4. Log into Canvas

  5. Click on theHelp Center” link to run the systems check

  6. Run the Webcam Check and, if necessary, resolve any issues.

  7. Run the System & Network Check. If a problem is indicated, see if a solution is provided in the Knowledge Base. Troubleshooting information can also be emailed to our institution's help desk.

Taking an Assessment

Using a Webcam (Respondus Monitor)

You may be required to use LockDown Browser with a webcam, which will record you during an online, non-proctored exam. This is called Respondus Monitor. Your computer must have a functioning webcam and microphone. A stable broadband connection is also required.

If an exam requires LockDown Browser and a webcam, you will be prompted to go through a “Startup Sequence” after following the previous steps 1-5.

  1. You will first need to review and agree to the Terms of Use.

  2. The Webcam Check will confirm that your webcam and microphone are working properly. The first time the Webcam Check is performed on a computer, Adobe Flash Player may require you to select Allow and Remember.

  3. The remaining steps of the Startup Sequence will depend on settings chosen by your instructor. Follow the instructions and note your progress along the top of the screen. If your instructor has enabled both the LockDown Browser and Monitor your experience might look something like this:

    1. The first step is to verify that your webcam is working properly. If you can see yourself on the screen click on Yes.

    2. Next, you will have to verify that your image appears properly in the window and that the microphone is working properly. Click on “Record Five Second Video” to record this sample for the system.

    3. Now you will have to take a photo to identify yourself. Click on “Take a Picture” to capture the image.  You will be prompted to retake the photo or accept the one you just captured.

    4. Now the system will prompt you to show your identification. The acceptable forms of ID usually include: state-issued identification (e.g. driver’s license), country-issued identification (e.g. passport), and your Stevens ID card.

    5. The Environment Check is next on the list. Make sure the area around your computer is clear of papers, books, phones, and anything else that your instructor has mentioned should not be present during the assessment. Click “Start Recording” and pan your camera around the room to properly show what is in the room with you. In most cases you should not have anyone else in the room with you unless your instructor has allowed for this. Please check with your instructor prior to taking the quiz as far as what is and isn’t permissible.

    6. After you have finished recording your environment the system will prompt you to check that your webcam is still focused properly.

    7. Lastly you will see the “Additional Instructions” screen which may have default language and/or instructions that your instructor has created specifically for this quiz.

    8. Click on “Begin Exam” to begin your quiz.

  1. If you encounter a problem, select the “It’s not working” link for troubleshooting tips.

The assessment will begin after the Startup Sequence is complete. You cannot exit LockDown Browser until the test is submitted for grading.
